Our Vocational College for Economy and Administration of the city of Herne/GER (www.mulvany-berufskolleg.de) would like to participate as partner or coordination in a EU project (Erasmus +/Strategic Partnership for School Education, Strategic Partnerschip for Vovational Education, Partnership between regions). We already have gathered experience with EU projects, e.g. as coordinator of the projects ‚ett-edu‘ (www.ett-edu.eu) or ‚elvet‘ (www.elvet.eu). At the moment we are partner in the projects INVET (www.invet.nrw.de) and COZIMA (www.cozima.eu). We were the first school in Herne that was awarded the quality seal ‚European School‘ in February 2008, this was the reward for years of activities of our college devoted to European education.
The Mulvany-Berufskolleg – Berufskolleg für Wirtschaft und Verwaltung der Stadt Herne currently has approx. 1800 students and 90 teachers. Graduates from tertiary education can continue their education in our commercial school with attractive programs, either full-time school-based which prepare them for professional education or study at the university, or within the German ‘dual’ vocational training system (working in companies and learning in school). Together with craftsmen enterprises, businesses, and manufacturing industries of the region our college offers trainings in all major commercial career qualifications. Principle of our vocational college is that all programmes lead to professional qualification.
We also offer study alongside work for professional advanced training in business management with focus on human resource management and foreign language.
The Vocational College for Economy and Administration was granted the so-called career advising seal of approval (‚Berufswahl-Siegel‘) for the second time in 2012. The career choice seal of approval is awarded to schools that prepare their students for the working world and facilitate the school-to-work transition for young people in an exemplary way. The certification is an evidence for the quality in the sector of career orientation instruction. Our vocational college was also granted the cachet ‚promotion of individuals‘ on 8th September, 2008 because we encourage and demand our students with a variety of services and measures.
One of our main focus is the teaching of computer skills, without which there is hardly a chance in the training and labour market. Our vocational college is facing the challenge to make sure all students have access to New Media, and also to qualify them in a solid and targeted training for the labour market. Adequate technical equipment with up-to-date hard- and software as well as an effective educational programme are the prerequisites for the teaching at our college. An online learning platform supports teachers and students. In a pilot project for the state of NRW we offer e-learning units based on a blended learning concept within ‚Bekosch‘, a target group-oriented programme of vocational education especially for young occupational travellers.
A further priority is the foreign language training. We offer a special course ‚ business assistant with the main focus foreign languages‘. Other programmes consist of English, French, and Spanish lessons. One of our teachers who will participate in possible EU projects has profound Portuguese language skills.
School authority is the city of Herne which is situated in the centre of the metropolitan area Ruhrgebiet (Ruhr Area) near Dortmund and Essen. The Ruhrgebiet is the former centre of the German mining and steel industries, structural changes are currently visible everywhere. The Ruhrgebiet was European Capital of Cultural in 2010. The area excels among others by very good public traffic infrastructure. Our college is located in the immediate vicinity to the central station of Herne.
